Kate Murphy, a 2017 Lake Braddock (VA) graduate, ran a U.S. No. 2 all-time mark last year at the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games. She blazed around the track running 9:14.02 for a new senior class record and U.S. No. 2 all-time mark. Previously, Melody Fairchild held the senior class record of 9:17.4, set in 1991.
In the same race, Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland High School placed second in 9:42.63. Her time was only a second off the New York state freshman record. Tuohy, the Nike Cross Nationals champion, will be making her indoor track debut this weekend with the potential to chase not only a state record but the national record.
Fellow New Yorker Mary Cain, from Bronxville, currently holds the national record in the 3K with her time of 9:04.51.
