1. The Buchanan Girls Jumpstarted The Best Rivalry Of The Season

The debate over the best girls team in California is only just beginning, too.

On Saturday at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Norco, Buchanan and Great Oak had a battle to the finish, with Buchanan coming through with a 94-118 victory, aided in part by a 1-2 finish from sophomore Corie Smith and junior Meagen Lowe.

The duo became just the third and fourth females ever to run under 16 minutes over the history of Woodbridge courses. Smith crossed in 15:58.40, while Lowe clocked a 15:59.30.

The girls team, ranked No. 6 in the most recent Flo50 rankings, positioned their third, fourth, and fifth runners at the 12-39-40 to close out their scoring and averaged 16:43 overall between a 92 second spread.

Great Oak, ranked No. 5 nationally in the Flo50 rankings, was close behind, though they scored their fifth in 60th place after going 5-10-14-29 in the first four places.

Over the course of the fall season we may see a lot of ebb and flow between girls teams -- and this also includes Davis High, too -- but perhaps in this early installment of statewide competition we've seen the first blow between rivals.
