Last year at this time, Flower Mound (Texas) High sophomore Alex Maier, our 2017 preseason Flo50 No. 2 ranked boys runner, began to shine.
At the Marcus I Invitational in Denton, Texas, Maier held his own against one of the best in the nation: Reed Brown from Southlake Carroll, Texas. Maier lost to Brown by only two seconds.
The showing ultimately turned some heads -- most expected the race to be Brown's from the beginning, as he chased Craig Lutz's course record of 14:53.60.
