Corning (NY) High graduate and Stanford University signee Jessica Lawson produced a great cap to her high school career on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina, grabbing a national title with a US No. 2 effort of 16:38.54 in the girls 5K at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
Lawson, a New York State Public High School Athletic Association outdoor champion in the 3000m, was one of four girls to produce times within the nation's top six performances of 2017, and her time was the overall best performance since March.
Lawson, who finished second in the 3000m indoors at New Balance Nationals Indoor in March, was third in the race last year in 16:52.60.
New York's Amanda Vestri was second in a US No. 4 time of 17:05.49, Michigan's Kayla Windemuller was third in a US No. 5 performance of 17:05.88 and Illinois' Grace McLaughlin was fourth in a US No. 6 time of 17:09.08.
