Finishing out the Great Southwest Classic on Saturday at the University of New Mexico track, the USA team which consisted of Jamal Walton, Tyrese Cooper, Thomas Burns and Sean Burrell smoked the field in a remarkable 3:03.35.
Because the team consisted of athletes from two different states and was outside the regular high school season, it would not be under consideration for a national record, even though it defeated the 32-year-old record of 3:07.40 last achieved by Hawthorne (Ca.) in 1985. The current US No. 1 would have also been beaten at 3:10.56.
However, the team likely would be approved for American Youth and Junior records.
According to USATF record books, the American World Junior record is 3:01.09 and the American Youth Record for 17-18 year olds is 3:06.22 -- which this team would be eligible for if all the athletes are under 19 years old.
