Liam Christensen is one of the best javelin throwers in the country. He's held the U.S. No. 1 mark in the javelin the past three years (2015-17). This year, his U.S. No. 1 mark is 223 feet 9.75 inches, which he threw at the Mount Pleasant Track Club Invitational. Christensen's PR in the event is 238 feet 2.25 inches from the 9th IAAF World Youth Championships in 2015. A senior at Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston, SC, Christensen has accomplished all of this despite the fact that the javelin is not even thrown at South Carolina's state meet.
We caught up with Christensen during his early-season training to see what it takes to be an elite-level javelin thrower. He has a packed schedule with school, homework, piano lessons, javelin practice, Olympic lifting, and gymnastics.
The workout was shot over the course of two days, the first of which Christensen had javelin practice and Olympic lifting, while on day two he had gymnastics. See and hear how Olympic lifting and gymnastics help the Stanford commit's pursuit to become a better javelin thrower.
