
Don't be surprised when a national record goes down in the girls 300m hurdles.
Union Catholic (NJ) senior and Olympian starlet Sydney McLaughlin will race the event this weekend in California.
Consider North Carolina native and University of Southern California hurdler Anna Cockrell as an example.
She's probably the closest athlete in the last two years to McLaughlin's talent. Here's a side-by-side comparison. Cockrell won the Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships in the 400m hurdles in 2015 in 57.10 seconds. She also placed first at the IAAF World U20 Championships, running 55.20. Cockrell's PR in the open 300 indoors was 38.78 seconds, while it was 40.74 seconds outdoors.
What about Sydney?
She qualified for the Olympics at the United States Track and Field Trials by running a time of 54.15 seconds in the 400m hurdles. She's run an open 300m time of 36.82 indoors and also took her state's Meet of Champs in the 400m at 51.87 seconds.
