Patience Guiding Trey Cunningham Toward Big Goals This Spring

Trey Cunningham has done just about all you can do in high school track and field.

The Winfield City (AL) High senior has 17 state titles to his name across both indoor and outdoor competition.

And he added his first two national championships within the last year -- including his most recent at New Balance Nationals Indoor in the 60m hurdles in March.

So what's another five-hour drive to UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile, Alabama, for the Mobile Challenge of Champions Invitational this weekend?

"I don't have a problem with it," Cunningham said. "It gives me more time to relax."

It will also give the Florida State signee time to think about his goals this spring.

The five-time Alabama outdoor champion in the 110m and 300m hurdles has hopes of breaking the 13 second barrier by season's end. No high school boy has done it before.

First, Cunningham will have to aim for the all-time national record of 13.08, held by Wayne Davis of Raleigh Southeast (NC) High in 2009.

"I try to take it one step at a time," he said. "That's easily my mindset."

A year ago, he ran a career best 13.35 seconds at an Alabama Section 2 meet before coming within two hundredths of a second at the USATF Junior National Outdoor Championships.

But to drop another .35 seconds?

"It's just a goal in my head," Cunningham said. "I don't shoot for it every meet, but whatever happens, happens."

On Saturday, the Winfield City senior will be playing it safe. While entered in both the 110m and 300m hurdles, he'll only focus on the short distance.

Cunningham says a nagging hip injury has him cautious moving forward.

"I'm just dealing with it and taking time off, going to therapy and resting as much as possible," he said.

Record or not, Cunningham will keep his sights set on his goals following the meet this weekend.

And maybe afterward, he'll grab some seafood in Mobile. "They've got really good seafood," he said.
