Motor City TC/Oak Park High School senior Cameron Cooper ran the fastest prep 800m ever on an oversized track by winning the Kentucky High School Invitational in 1:49.82. He had more company than many expected, as Georgia's Ryne Bevan pushed him in the early stages and hung on to run US #3 1:51.56. Check out the full race video above, and the finish line shot below:
2016 Olympian Robby Andrews set the national high school record of 1:49.21 in 2009. Even if Cooper had eclipsed that mark today, the time would not stand as an official record because the track inside Nutter Fieldhouse at the University of Kentucky is oversized.
Cooper has several more chances at the indoor record, with targets on the Michigan State Championships and New Balance Nationals Indoor. The senior is undecided on a college and declined to name which schools he is considering.
