The prospect of two head-to-head sprint finals between Jayla Kirkland and Lynna Irby at the Kentucky High School Invitational was one of the top highlights to watch for on Saturday afternoon, and the two national champions didn't disappoint.
Kirkland won the first contest, the 60m dash, with a new nation-leading time of 7.34. Irby clocked 7.42 for runner-up honors, a time that ties for No. 7 in the nation this year.
In the 200m, it was Irby's turn to fly. She clocked 23.70 to win the 200m final; she now ranks No. 1 in the nation and tied the fieldhouse high school record. Kirkland took runner-up honors in 23.88, the third-fastest time in the nation this year.
