Kate Murphy anchored her Lake Braddock, Virginia squad to a new national record in the girls distance medley relay. Competing at the VA Showcase in Lynchburg, Lake Braddock ran 11:34.54 to sneak under the old standard. North Rockland's 11:34.85 from 2016 was the previous national record.
Braddock's leadoff leg split around 3:40 for 1200 meters, while Murphy anchored in 4:38 and change. After their Virginia rivals EC Glass briefly led, Lake Braddock was solo for nearly the entire race. Though Murphy is a 4:07 1500 meter runner, 4:38 with no one to push her in January was an impressive performance.
Murphy will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 PM Eastern in the girls 1000 meters, where she's already the No. 3 performer in high school history.
