Despite warm weather, the first major high school cross country invitational of the season produced some fantastic results. The annual showdown at the Asics Hot Summer Bash takes place in Ohio, bringing together many of the top boys teams from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky.
This year a handful of team entered the competition with a chance to take home the team title, but in the end Carmel (IN) dominated the field, placing their top five in the top fourteen spots in the final results. Led by Dan Kinn's third place finish, Carmel placed 3, 5, 9, 11, 14, to combine for 42 points, easily outdistancing runner-up St. John's Jesuit (OH) by 71 points.
Perhaps the biggest surprise for the Greyhounds of Carmel was the result of their front running senior Logan Rosenberg. Rosenberg entered the season as one of the top returnees in Indiana from 2007, but finished a disappointing 35th overall on Saturday, finishing as Carmel's sixth runner. If Rosenberg can jump back to his leading position, Carmel will prove to be even stronger than many originally predicted.
St. John's Jesuit (OH) followed the lead of front running senior Kevin Yarnell, who finished second individually in 16:06. Placing first was defending Ohio state cross country champion Donny Roys (Sr., Medina) (pictured left by Dave Dillahunt). Roys ran away from the field over the second half of the race, winning by eight second in 15:58. Roys also helped his team place fourth overall with 129 points, while Cleveland St. Ignatius (OH) placed just ahead of Medina (OH) in third with 126 points.
--Race Notes--
Perhaps the biggest showcase of talent the whole day proved to be in the freshmen race. Carmel frosh Nick Kirkpatrick won the race in an outstanding 17:14, forty seconds up on his nearest competitor. Kirkpatrick's time would have placed him 35th overall in the varsity race, finishing two seconds ahead of Carmel sixth runner Logan Rosenberg...Another freshman impressed, but this time in the varsity race. Reynoldsburg newcomer Tsehaye Abraha placed sixth overall in 16:23, leading his team to the same finish in the final team scores.
