Athlete: Sam Worley
Year: 2017
School: New Braunfels Canyon, TX
Analysis: In 2014, Sam Worley finished 12th at the UIL state cross country championship as a sophomore. A year later, Worley was unable to participate in the 2015 Texas state cross country meet due to illness. But he rallied to finish to his season on a strong note by taking sixth at the Nike Cross Nationals South Regional and 75th at 2015 NXN.
That year on the track, Worley's friendly rivalry with fellow Texan Reed Brown continued. At the Texas state track and field championship, he took second to Brown in the 3200m, and dropped the U.S. No. 8 time (8:51.44) in the process. Worley followed that up the next day in the 1600m by running 4:04.59 to defeat Brown for the first time over that distance in his career. Worley closed out his track season with a 1:50.58 800m at TTFCA Meet of Champions.
