National Weekend Rundown for May 7

Record Attempt Ends in Injury For Josephus Lyles

Sprint phenoms Noah and Josephus Lyles don't race each other often. The brothers from T.C. Williams High School in Virginia typically opt for different events and sweep for gold. But yesterday at their final home invitational, they planned to go for a blistering fast 200m.

Noah hoped to break the national record (20.13) and planned to lead Josephus under the U.S. Olympic Team Trials standard of 20.5, according to Dan Roth of the Washington Post.

Noah met the Olympic Trials standard last summer with his 20.18 win at the USATF Junior Nationals.

Josephus recently ran an all-time best of 20.73 just a few weeks ago and looked poised to run quick after posting a 10.51 win in the 100m.

But the national champion sprinter crumbled to the ground in pain after the starter's pistol fired to begin the 200m final.

"For a quick second, I was just like, 'Should I stop?' " Noah said to Roth. "As soon as I thought that, I realized he wouldn't want me to stop. So I just kept running, and if I could run to the finish line fast enough, I could get back faster."

He did get there quick -- in a new nation-leading mark of 20.33 (+2.0).

Josephus later tweeted that he has a strained quadricep. T.C. Williams coach Michael Hughes says Josephus will not race for three weeks.
