The Fastest Kids In Ireland Are At The Millrose Games

The Wanamaker Mile rematch between defending champion Matt Centrowitz and 2015 runner-up Nick Willis may be the most highly anticipated race of tomorrow's NYRR Millrose Games.

But the cutest race of the day will likely be the NYRR Fastest Kid on the Block.

The annual race pits New York City's finest eight-and-under sprinters against each other in a 55-meter dash.

This year, two of that number are Irish.

Darragh Fahy and Cait O'Reilly won the Firefly's Fastest Feet in Ireland contest to determine the fastest boy and girl in the nation. Thousands of Irish children took part in the event coordinated by Sligo athletics coach Dermot McDermott. The top eight boys and girls competed in the national finals held at the Athlone Institute of Technology, where Fahy and O'Reilly emerged as the victors and earned the privilege to compete at the historic Millrose Games -- not to mention a trip to New York City!

Meet Director Ray Flynn (pictured above) is a native of Longford, Ireland -- and former middle distance Olympian. The Wanamaker Mile, in particular, has a strong Irish history: Eamonn Coghlan won the famed indoor mile race seven times, Marcus O'Sullivan and Ronnie Delaney won four times each and Niall Bruton and Mark Carroll each own a title.

Fahy is fron Loughrea in county Galway. O'Reilly trains with Cavan's Annalee AC.
