The last time that Drew Hunter made the trip north to the Armory, he ran a thrilling 3:58.25 mile--the fastest ever by a high schooler indoors. He's returning this Saturday for the Millrose Games, and the obvious question is: how much faster can he go?
We went through the entire field--Hunter isn't in the Wanamaker Mile with Matt Centrowitz and Nick Willis, he's in a B heat called the "Armory Invitational Mile"--and tried to see who would push Hunter to a new PR. On first glance, the field is not quite as loaded as it was two weeks ago; Hunter has a better mile PR than six of the other thirteen men in the field. But a look at 1500m PRs (converted through the MileSplit calculator) reveals that Hunter will be in a good position to get pulled along by this field. Only three men have converted PRs that are still slower than Hunter's mile mark.
No high schooler has ever run 3:57, indoors or out. Alan Webb's HS record is 3:53, and Jim Ryun ran 3:55, 3:56, and 3:58. MileSplit will be providing on-site coverage and interviews from Hunter's attempt on Saturday to continue to rewrite the record books.
