Weekend Highlights & Results (4/04 - 4/06)

Mobile Challenge of Champions (AL)

Mobile Challenge of Champions: Meet Page / Open Results / Invitational Results

Much like the Mobile Meet of Champions, a top-tier cross country invitational, the Mobile Challenge of Champions brought together many of the top stars of the sport from southern states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.  With so much talent converging in one place great results were bound to happen.

Leading the list of impressive accomplishments was sprint star Chalonda Goodman (Newnan, GA), who beat Breanna Hubbard (Mundy's Mill, GA) 11.54-11.88 to earn herself a U.S. #1 ranking in the event.  Goodman also earned herself a big victory in the 200m dash as well, winning the event in 23.93.

The girls distance events were quite impressive as well.  NTN individual champion Madeline Morgan (Mountain Brook, AL) led an impressive field in the 3200m run, beating runner-up Malia Cali (St. Thomas Aquinas) 10:29.26-10:39.64.  Meanwhile, the 1600m was perhaps the best all-around race of the day.  Up front Cory McGee (Pass Christian, MS) narrowly beat Amanda Winslow (Collins Hill, GA) 4:50.67-4:50.88, as the race came down to the final few meters where McGee pulled ahead.  Both athletes broke the meet record of 4:54.25 that McGee set last year.  Three other girls also broke five minutes, as Virginia Hine (White State, TN) ran 4:55.01 for third, Catherine Diethlem (Mountain Brook, AL) ran 4:55.82 for fourth and Katlyn Will (Corinth, MS) ran 4:55.99 for fifth.  Marie Demedics (Mountain Brook, AL) continued her squads impressive performances with her win in the 800m dash in 2:11.35.

WI TFA State Indoor Championships (WI)

WI TFA State Indoor Championships: Meet Page / Boys Results / Girls Results

The last official indoor meet of the high school season took place at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with the Wisconsin TFA State Indoor Championships taking place.  The top results of the entire competition took place in the boys jumps, which saw a few U.S. top twenty efforts.  The top performance came from Marcus Jenkins (Bradley Tech, WI), who won the long jump in a U.S. #3 mark of 24-10.75.  Jenkins beat a strong challenge from rival Marcus Smith (West Allis, WI), as Smith finished in second with a leap of 22-04.

However, Smith earned his own top U.S. mark with his 48-05.75 leap in the triple jump, beating a field that had two other competitors jump over 45-00.  In the high jump, Paul Annear (Richland Center, WI) continued his winning ways with his top mark of 6-08.  Annear has shown time and again this season that he is the top high jumper in the state.

The top event on the girls side came in the 1600m run.  An intense battle between Jami Hill (Onalaska, WI) and Ashley Beutler (Belleville, WI) took place with each athlete really laying out their finest performance possible.  On the last lap Hill gapped Beutler just a bit and pulled away to a big time victory of 4:54.31 to Beutler's runner-up performance of 4:55.69.  These were two great performances that closed out the Wisconsin indoor season on a high note.

Kearny Relays (NJ)

Kearny Relays: Meet Page / Boys Results / Girls Results

One of the top match-ups of the weekend took part at the Kearny Relays in New Jersey.  Throwers Nick Vena (Fr., Morristown, NJ) and Mike Alleman (Sr., Scotch Plains-Fa., NJ) renewed their intense rivalry that's took both athletes to U.S. #1 rankings in the shot put during the indoor season.  In Saturday's shot put competition, Alleman and Vena went throw for throw, with Vena's final throw of 63-06 taking the win over Alleman's 59-11 best.  Vena's throw broke two national records in the process as well.  The 14 year-old freshman set an age group record, while breaking Kevin Bookout's freshman national record of 63-00 as well.

While Alleman may have lost the shot put, he won back some momentum in the growing rivalry in the discus.  Alleman won the event with a 146-00 toss, while Vena placed third to Blake Hughes (Sr., Montclair, NJ) 140-01 to 138-03.

Texas Relays Results: Friday Track / Friday Field / Saturday Track / Saturday Field

Saturday Highlights

It wasn't a matter of if or when fast performances would take place at the Texas Relays Saturday, it was merely a question of how many great performances would take place.  From the first event, the Distance Medley Relay, the athletes and teams were putting up big results.  The men of Southlake Carroll (TX) earned a 7:46.86 4x8 victory Friday evening and were looking to turn out something special in the DMR Saturday.  With the fine anchor leg of Colby Lowe (pictured left by Alex Aldaco), who ran a reported 4:06.3, the squad shattered the only meet record by nine and a half seconds, winning in 10:02.47.

Meanwhile in other distance news, Chelsey Sveinsson (Fr., Greenhill, TX) continued her dominating ways by winning the girls 1600m run in 4:44.70.  Sveinsson got off to a quick start, easily losing the rest of the field in the first 600m of the race.  From there she continued to push forward, closing strong and running one of the fastest times nationally ever run by a freshman.

The girls sprint relays were on a fire as well.  Lancaster (TX) ran the fastest 4x4 time in the prelims Friday night and much like the Southlake Carroll distance squad, they too were looking to perform big in Saturday's finals.  In the 4x200m relay, Lancaster pulled off a big win over traditional sprint powerhouse Long Beach Wilson (CA), beating the out-of-state team 1:38.83-1:38.87, that came down to the tape.  In the 4x100m relay, Lancaster cruised to another close win, this time beating Klein Collins (TX) 46.53-46.86.

In field event action, Matt Kosecki (Jr., Humble, TX) topped U.S. #1 returnee Geoffrey Tabor (Sr., Ardmore, OK) in the boys discus, breaking the meet record with his winning throw of 202-03, which left him less than 13 feet off the national junior class record.  However, Tabor earned the win in the shot put early in the day with his heave of 62-04.75, which saw him beat his cousin Cameron Tabor (Jr., Norman, OK), who finished in the runner-up spot with a 61-11.00 toss.

Back on the track, Brandon Tucker (Sr., Lewisville, TX) beat a strong field in the boys 110m hurdles with a great time of 13.86.  Tucker got off to a lightning start and never looked back, becoming the only athlete on the day to run under 14 seconds in the event.

The 4x400m relays closed out the day for high school competition.  In both Division II races, U.S. #1 marks were earned in the event.  In the girls race, Lancaster (TX) continued their domination on the day, winning their third sprint relay and beating a tough field in 3:43.60.  Lancaster outdistanced Long Beach Wilson (CA), who finished second in 3:45.22.  Meanwhile, Leander (TX) won the boys race in a strong time of 3:14.95, beating runner-up Arlington Bowie (TX) by nearly a second (3:15.90).

Friday Highlights

The pole vault kicked off the high school portion of the Texas Relays Friday, as both the boys and girls fields produced some great results.  Jack Whitt (Jr., Norman North, OK) won the boys event with a vault of 16-09, easily outdistancing his competition, while showing he is one of the most consistent vaulters in the nation this season.  Behind Whitt were three others who went 16-00.  On the girls side, Shade Weygandt (Jr., Mansfield, TX) beat NIN/NSIC national champion Rachel Laurent (Sr., Vanderbilt Catholic, LA) 13-04 to 13-00.  This is the second time Weygandt has beaten Laurent this year (the first being at the Simplot Games), while Laurent beat Weygandt at Nike Indoor Nationals.

In one of the days relay finals, Southlake Carroll (TX) ran an amazing 7:46.86 to easily win the boys 4x800m relay.  Having Foot Locker qualifiers Colby Lowe and C.J. Brown on the squad, the team ran away from the field to win by nearly ten seconds and set a stadium record in the event.

In other relay action, Long Beach Wilson (CA) and Lancaster (TX) dominated the girls 4x200m and 4x400m relay prelims.  LB Wilson ran 1:39.18 in the 4x2 to have the top seed heading into Saturday's finals, while Lancaster ran 1:39.20 for the second spot.  In the 4x4, Lancaster captured the top seed with their strong 3:45.84 effort, while LB Wilson ran 3:49.67 for the second seed.  Both these squads will battle in the finals Saturday.

In the 3200m run, Craig Lutz (Fr., FM Marcus, TX) won the event in 9:14.09.  Lutz' win not only ranks him as one of the top performers outdoors this season thus far, but also as one of the top freshman of all-time.  Coming in second was Parker Stinson (So., Cedar Park, TX) in 9:24.03.  On the girls side, Ashley Isham (So., CP Vista Ridge, TX) won the race in 10:37.17.  Meanwhile in the girls high jump, Brigetta Barrett (Jr., Duncanville, TX) lept 5-11 to win the event and continue her great momentum this season.

Saturday Highlights

The first track event Saturday that really pit two star athletes against one another came in the boys 1600m run, where Foot Locker qualifiers James Attarian (Sr., Dublin, CA) beat Miles Unterreiner (Sr., Gig Harbor, WA) 4:15.76-4:15.89.  This race was close the entire way, as Attarian basically outleaned Unterreiner at the line.

The highlight of the day in the field events came in the girls triple jump.  The top four national returnees were entered in the event heading into Saturday's competition, and while Vashti Thomas (Sr., Mt. Pleasant, CA) scratched from the start lists, the athletes involved still put up some amazing results.  U.S. #1 returnee Briana Stewart (Sr., Logan, CA) won the event in 40-05.25, just beating out runner-up Alitta Boyd (Jr., Moreau Catholic, CA), who lept 40-04.75.  Coming in a strong third was Amanda Hunter (Sr., Marlborough, CA) with her mark of 38-09.

In the boys sprints, Sebastian Sam (Sr., Oak Grove, CA) cruised to the win in the 400m dash.  Sam beat the field by nearly a second, while running 48.00.  In the girls 100m dash, Ashton Purvis (So., St. Elizabeth, CA) won the event in 11.74, crushing the field by over half a second.

Later in the day, Dahlys Marshall (Sr., Valley Christian, CA) pulled off a big win in the girls 100m hurdles.  Marshall beat a hyper-talented field in 14.09, beating stars such as Julian Purvis (Sr., St. Elizabeth, CA), Briana Stewart (Sr., Logan, CA) and Ashtyn Baltimore (Jr., Marlborough, CA).  This was perhaps the strongest field in the event nationally this outdoor season thus far, which highlights Marshall's win even more.  One notable athlete missing from all of Saturday's results was Vashti Thomas (Sr., Mt. Pleasant, CA), who did not complete a jump in the long jump Friday.  Concerns are floating around that she is injured.

Friday Highlights

A few early results from the Stanford Invitational show that some lively times & marks are ahead this weekend in Palo Alto, California.  Leading the way Friday were the prelims of the girls 100m hurdles, which saw superstar Julian Purvis (Sr., St. Elizabeth, CA) run the fastest time of the day in 13.81.  Trailing closely behind were Briana Stewart (Sr., Logan, CA) in 13.96, Dahlys Marshall (Sr., Valley Christian, CA) in 14.15 and Vashti Thomas (Sr., Mt. Pleasant, CA) in 14.16.  All nine qualifiers in the event for Saturday's final finished at 14.77 or faster in the prelims.

The boys 3000m run, which was a final Friday, saw a great finish between Diego Estrada (Sr., Alisal, CA) and Foot Locker qualifier Miles Unterreiner (Sr., Gig Harbor, WA).  The two ran much of the race stride for stride, pushing a very fast pace.  In the last lap the two were clearly ahead of the rest of the field and neared the finish tape neck and neck.  Estrada drew ahead in the final strides 8:28.46 to 8:29.25 for one heck of an exciting finish.

In the boys pole vault, Nico Weiler (Sr., Los Gatos, CA) was hoping to top 17-00 yet again this season, but only managed to clear 16-06.  However, his mark was good enough for him to win the event, beating his opponents by six inches.  Two others cracked the 16-00 barrier.

What a way to kick-off the weekend nationally at the Florida RelaysJeffrey Demps (South Lake, FL) ran an amazing, wind-legal time of 10.17 for 100m, ranking him U.S. #5 all-time in the event.  Demps' mark also ranks him #3 in the world currently, regardless of age, however, it is very early in the collegiate and professional seasons.  (All time rankings courtesy of Jack Shepard)

Top Boys 100m Dash Performances of All-Time

3. 10.15 - Henry Neal (TX)
4. 10.16 - Houston McTear (FL)
5. 10.17 - Jeffrey Demps (FL)

Two more great performances were put up in the 1600m runs.  On the boys side, Joseph Franklin (Sr., Godby, FL) ran a U.S. #1 time of 4:09.13 to win the boys race over a strong field, including U.S. #1 returnee Dylan Ferris (Sr., East Forsyth, NC), who placed second in 4:14.17.  On the girls side, Foot Locker qualifier Brittany Koziara (Boone, FL) beat fellow Foot Locker qualifier Kayla Hale (Holy Trinity, FL) 4:54.18 to 4:58.22.  Amanda Perkins (Spruce Creek, FL) also broke five minutes in the race, taking third in 4:58.77.

Palm Beach County Championships (FL)

Palm Beach County Championships: Meet Page / Results

Written by Jason Byrne (FLRunners.com)

We saw cross country national champion Ashley Brasovan make her reappearance to the racing scene a week ago after she had been sidelined from an injury, which had kept her out most of the year. While we all hoped she would be back into form in time for the state meet and postseason, it looked like she did have a while to go. Her times, while certainly still respectable, where not shall we say "Brasovan-esque": 5:10 and 11:27. Well, last night at the Palm Beach County Championship we saw those worries put to rest. She ran a meet record 10:33.27 in the 3200 meters, which followed a 5:06.58 1600! Nice double, Ashley, and nice to see you back!

But that wasn't all for the fireworks at Cardinal Newman School for the night. Leonardo Seymore showed that he is no joke; he wants to stake a claim against Jefferey Demps for the title of the state's fastest runner. And he has a good argument! His meet record 10.35 in the prelims, followed by a 10.39 in the finals is no joke! That 10.35 is the fastest wind-legal time in the state, even if just barely wind legal--the guage was at 2.0 exactly (the legal limit). And as if that weren't enough Seymore ran two other (wind legal) times in the 200 meters: 21.14 in the prelims and 21.19 in the finals. Those four runs in a one day meet can be described with no other word but "sick"! And although the results do not report the relay legs, the Dwyer won both the 4x100 (41.75 Prelims, 41.57 Finals) and 4x400 (3:22.05)--and I'll betcha he took a handoff in one of those as well!
