Isaac Cortes, Zach Shinnick, Courtney Corrin Run Fast, Jump Far
In the first major California action of the winter, three athletes produced would-be US #1 marks. Competing at the California Winter Championships, Great Oak middle distance runner Isaac Cortes ran 1:18.91 in the 600, a nation-leading time by 0.03 seconds and a strong tuneup before he travels east for the Millrose Games next week.
Over half the distance, Damien junior Zach Shinnick won the 300 in 32.90 seconds. It's hard to compare an outdoor time (like Shinnick's) to an indoor one, but no high school boy has ever broken 33 seconds indoors.
Defending US junior long jump champion Courtney Corrin leapt 20-01 in the long jump, the best mark in the country this year by half an inch.
Though those marks are the best in the nation for their events this year, they are not US #1 as they were on an outdoor track, and therefore not eligible for indoor rankings.
