Sun. NIN Results: Boys Track / Boys Field / Girls Track / Girls Field

Sunday NIN Highlights

- In the final events of the day, the 4x400m relays, Eleanor Roosevelt (MD) proved victorious on the girls side in a thrilling battle with Landstown (VA).  Landstown had the lead for much of the race and going into the anchor leg they looked like they would win yet another relay.  However, Eleanor Roosevelt' anchor leg had other thoughts, catching and passing Landstown's anchor in the final 30 meters of the race, winning 3:46.43-3:46.91.  On the boys side, Bethel (VA) dominated, winning in 3:20.79.  The squad led from start to finish, showing their dominance in the event that they've had all indoor season.

- Just like the girls shot put, the boys shot put was amazing.  Six seperate throwers went over 60 feet, with Michael Barbas (TX) throwing 66-03 for the win.

- In the boys 4x800m relay, the crowd stood on their feet and cheered wildly as seven different schools drew into contention with one lap to go.  However, New Bern (NC), aka Track Eastern Carolina, led the whole race and never relented down the back stretch, winning in dramatic fashion over the ever tough Chaminade (NJ) team.  New Bern won 7:58.18-7:58.75.  On the girls side, Mountain Brook (AL) used powerful third and fourth legs to blow away the competition in meet record form.  The team from Alabama ran 9:04.80, winning by nearly eight seconds.

Photo: Luke Puskedra (UT) outkicks Colby Lowe (TX) to win boys two-mile

- Luke Puskedra (UT) beat Colby Lowe (TX) 8:49.58-8:50.79 in the boys two mile, in a classic dual between two of the best in the land.  Puskedra and Lowe took the pacing duties right from the gun, wanting it to be an honest race.  With every athlete in the field capable of breaking nine minutes, many expected this race to be too close to call.  It was in a sense, as Puskedra and Lowe traded leads for most of the race, with Puskedra pushing the pace the last three laps and pulling away over the final 100m.

- Both 800m races were exciting.  In the girls race, freshman mile winner Chelsey Sveinsson (TX) beat one heck of a field, running in the lead from the gun.  She split 31 seconds for the first 200m and 60 seconds for the first 400m.  While it wasn't clear what her goal was, it was obvious that she wanted to see how fast she could go and not worry about the competition.  Sveinsson crossed the line in 2:11.52.  In the boys race, a pedestrian 55.3 opening 400m left the race wide open.  As the athletes approached 600m, Andrew Perkins (WI) took the lead and really pushed the pace.  Down the backstretch Joseph Franklin (FL) caught up to Perkins and ran stride for stride heading into the last turn.  Blasting off the turn, both athletes swung wide with Franklin nipping Perkins at the tape, 1:54.09 to 1:54.65.

Photo: Wayne Davis Jr. (NC) is all smiles after his 60m hurdle win

- Wayne Davis Jr. (NC) finally got what he was looking for all indoor season.  Davis wanted desperately to be apart of hurdle history, and with his 7.62 60m hurdle win Sunday, he tied the national record.  He got out to a very fast start and continued to gain speed the entire way.  Davis was pushed quite hard as well, with Michael Hancock (CO) finishing just behind him in 7.67.

- Jacquelyn Coward (TN) won the girls 60m hurdles like most predicted.  Her winning time of 8.32 was a meet record.

- Joseph Morris (CO) got off to a great start, but couldn't turn his legs over, hanging on to win the boys 60m dash in 6.76, edging Devon Smith (MD) who finished second in 6.77.  On the girls side, Brittany Long (GA) won in 7.44, dominating the field like she has all season.

- In the girls mile, Jillian Smith (Jr., Southern Regional, NJ) raced with great patience, sitting behind the leaders and their conservative opening pace.  Throughout the first half of the race Smith gradually worked her way up to the top four and at the half way point a pack of four had clearly distinguished themselves, pacing through the 800m mark in 2:27.5.  From there Smith gradually upped the pace, until the final 300m where she simply blew away the competition on her way to winning in 4:53.68.  Madeline Morgan (Jr., Mountain Brook, AL) was runner-up in 4:56.01.

Photo: Karen Shump (PA) and her coach after her U.S. #1 SP of 52-04

- Earlier we reported that Becky O'Brien (ME) threw a new U.S. #1 in the girls shot put...well, Karen Shump (PA) did one better on her second throw of the finals.  Shump tossed the shot put 52-04, besting O'Brien's throw by eleven inches.  Shump also tossed 51-08 on her final throw of the day.  Showing incredibly emotion after her win Shump said, "It's unbelievable!"

- Victoria Lucas (TX) won the girls high jump with a leap of 5-09.  Once clearing 5-09 she upped the bar to 6-01, narrowly missing all three attempts.

- On his second long jump attempt of the day, Marquise Goodwin (TX) lept 24-07 to equal the U.S. #2 mark in the event.  Goodwin also qualified for the 60m dash finals, winning his heat in a U.S. top ten performance of 6.80.  In the finals, Goodwin bested his best jump of the day by one inch, winning the event in 24-08.

Photo: Becky O'Brien (ME) about to throw her new U.S.#1 SP of 51-05

- Becky O'Brien (ME) threw 51-05 in the girls shot put so far.  On her first throw of the day O'Brien upped her PR, becoming the first prep thrower over 51 feet this year.  Finals in the event are about to start.

- In the girls semi-finals of the 60m hurdles, Jacquelyn Coward (TN) upped the anty, running 8.47 and remaining the fastest competitor on the day.  Jasmin Stowers (SC) won her heat in 8.60, while Ryann Krais (PA) won the third heat in 8.71.  All three will meet in the finals later today.

Photo: Michael Hancock (CO) wins his 60m hurdle prelim

- On the boys side of the 60m hurdle prelims, Wayne Davis Jr. (NC) and Michael Hancock (CO) showed their greatness.  Both athletes easily blew away their competition and qualified for the semi-finals.  Davis ran the fastest time of the prelims in 7.73, while Hancock ran 7.84 for the second fastest time of the day.

- In the girls 60m hurdle prelims, Jacquelyn Coward (TN), Jasmin Stowers (SC) and Ryann Krais (PA) all easily advanced to the the semi-finals.  Coward won her heat in 8.56, Stowers won her heat in 8.69 and Krais won her heat in 8.75.  Coward's finish was the fastest time of all preliminary races.

Photo: Maverick Darling (MI) after his boys "B" two mile win

- Maverick Darling (Sr., Ovid-Elise, MI) and Octavia Rinehardt (Sr., Tallwood, VA) won their respective heats of the two-mile.  While the top seeded flights are this afternoon, the first event of Sunday's finals were the first heets of this event.  The girls two-mile was incredibly exciting, as numerous girls ran in the top three throughout the race.  However, Rinehardt took the lead after the mile and never relented, winning in 11:03.92.  Darling ran away from the boys field, taking the lead after the mile and running 9:16.54 for the win.  Mark Dennin (Sr., Boyertown, PA) was second.
