Is it time for cross country already?! As August winds down into September, runners all over the nation are starting to dust off their spikes with pre-season races. Check out top results from the weekend!
- Wake County Kickoff Classic (NC) - The girl who out kicked Ryen Frazier is back! That's Nevada Mareno, who bypassed track to play soccer this spring after setting the National Sophomore Class Record of 4:43.23 to win New Balance Nationals over Frazier. The Leesville Road, N.C. junior ran 9:58.65 for 3k to defeat four-time state champ Sophie Ebihara of Cardinal Gibbons by almost a minute. That time converts to about 10:42.65 for 3200m/10:46.36 for two miles. Ebihara, a sub-18 5k talent, ran 10:45.11 for second. Unofficial hand times marked Mareno at 5:01 for the first mile - "lightning fast and largely downhill, but still..." reports NCRunners. The Leesville Road Pride girls won the Grade 11-12 scrimmage, as four runners placed in the top 15 of the Grade 11-12 race. Likely varsity contributor Audrey Hemming placed 12th in the Grade 9-10 race.
- OHSAA Early Season Invitational (OH) - Have we found this fall's freshman phenom already? Grace Kilroy of Centerville runs 18:26 to win the Section A race by seven seconds over junior India Johnson (a 5:01 1600m runner). Kilroy has some cross country experience, as she enters the prep scene with a middle school best of 11:51 for 3200m last fall. On the boys side, Bradley Davis of Dublin Jerome records the fastest time of the day (so far!) in 15:50.90 to win Section B. Stay tuned for more results.
