Last year Candace Hill of Rockdale County (Conyers, Ga.) lost her first race of the year and then went on to win at least 20 straight contests, posting four legal times between 23.12 and 23.14. Her best win came at the New Balance outdoor national where she ran 23.14. This year she continues undefeated with a personal legal best of 23.05. Her all-conditions best came at the Great Southwest Invitational at Albuquerque (N.M.) where she ran 22.76 with an aiding 2.8 meters per second wind. Hill won the U.S. trials in 23.14 with Lauren Rain Williams of Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Ca.) second at 23.33. Unlike the 100 there appears to be a solid challenger entered at the WYC. Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain has a best of 23.02 in finishing second at the Bulgarian national championships in Plovdiv in June. Jamaican's Shaneil English, at 23.38, and Kimone Shaw, at 23.89, will be doubling back from the 100. Brianne Bethel of Bahamas has run 23.47.
