George Patrick of Brentwood Academy (Brentwood, Tn.) competing in his first traditional decathlon of the year, won the U.S. trials in 7,282 to rank as the No. 6 Youth in the world. His strongest events are the 110 hurdles, where he has a best of 14.12 over the high school 39 inches hurdles, and the long jump at 23-8 ¾. , Niklas Kaul of German is the leader at 7,783 followed by Hans Christian Hausenberg of Estonia, at 7,713, and Toralv Opsal or Norway at 7,444. This is the first year the decathlon will be contested. It is replacing the octathlon.
