DAY ONE - PRELIMS

A year stronger from the 2014 CIF Finals when he finished as a California state runner-up in the 200 and 400, Michael Norman of Vista Murietta dominated Day 1 by clocking 20.98 200m and 47.05 400m in the prelims as the fastest qualifier for each event.

  • Pre-meet favorite Austin Tamagno (US #5 4:06 Mile) of Brea Olinda wins his heat of the 1600m easily, clocking 4:13.82, as Ross Walker advances with the fastest prelim time of 4:13.78 to win heat 2.
  • US #1 shot putter Matt Katnik throws 71-5.75 to advance as top qualifier! His PR is 72-3, but he's looking for the California State Meet Record of 74-4 in the finals tomorrow. He also advances to discus finals.
  • Two false starts delay the Boys 100m dash, including one that looked like it may result in the disqualification of US #7 and pre-meet favorite T.J. Brock of Chaminade. However, the junior is left with a warning and he advances safely in 10.47, just off his wind-legal best of 10.42. He comes back to win his 200m heat in 21.16, though he has a lot on his hands for the final as US #1 Michael Norman of Vista Murrieta makes it look easy, winning heat 1 of the 200m in 20.98. Norman is also the fastest qualifier in the 400m, clocking 47.05 - nearly jogging until Zachary Shinnick challenged him for the win. Sophomore Shinnick safely advanced with his 47.34, a PR.
  • Isaac Cortes of Great Oak is the fastest qualifier in the 800m with 1:52.19. The junior flew to a solo US #4 4:06 1600m/ US #20 1:51.44 double at the Southern Section Division Finals, but is bypassing the 1600m to focus solely on the 800m. Isaac Trevino of Centennial is the top seed with his US #18 1:51.39

Deepest 800m final ever? All 12 qualifiers broke 2:10, led by Jacquelyn Hill of Etiwanda with a monster kick for 2:08.06.

Deepest 800m final ever? All 12 qualifiers broke 2:10, led by sophomore Jacquelyn Hill of Etiwanda with a monster kick for 2:08.06.

Girls Highlights:

  • This could be the fastest 800m final in California state history, as all 12 girls run under 2:10! In fact, No. 13 Juliana Mount runs 2:09.55 and does not advance.Two-time CIF champion Mikaela Smith of Clovis North wins heat 1, advances as No. 3 qualifier in new season-best with 2:08.06 as sophomore Jacquelyn Hill of Etiwanda throws down a monster kick to pass Hannah Benoit of Buchanan (2:08.37) and is the surprise top qualifier in US #11 2:08.06. The run is her first-ever sub-2:10.
  • Great Oak's Destiny Collins famously fell in the 1600m finals last year, but still rallied for second place. The US #2 4:40 girl is leaving nothing for chance this year, as a potential invite to the adidas Dream Mile is also on the line. Collins is the fastest qualifier with a relaxed 4:47.26, just ahead of Marissa Williams (4:47.36), while Amanda Gehrich had to hold off a fast-closing Lauren Moffett in heat 2 as both finished in 4:50. Collins will take on Fiona O'Keeffe in the 3200m on Saturday.
  • Jasmyne Graham of Eleanor Roosevelt is No. 1 ranked for a reason. The USC-bound senior tied US #4 13.45 in the prelims of the 100m hurdles! Just behind her was Agoura sophomore Tara Davis, who set California State Sophomore Class Record and Ventura County Record in 100m hurdles with 13.48 effort. Davis leads state finalists in triple jump with 40-8 effort, just off her own US #6 40-9.25.
  • In the longer 300m hurdles, a surprise leader emerges in Dani Johnson of Cathedral Catholic, who improves from US #21 42.14 to US #5 in 41.34! US #2 super-sophomore Jurnee Woodward advances safely in 42.02, well off her PR 41.10, but surely with plenty leftover for the finals. Morganne Hill rounds out the favorites, nearly improving her own US #9 with a 41.78 run, as all three win their respective heats to make for a loaded final.
  • US #9 Hannah Waller of Buchanan advances to 400m finals with fastest time, clocking 53.78. The junior has run 53.57 this year and reportedly looked like she was jogging. Freshman Kirsten Carter of Santa Rose is second-fastest qualifier, winning heat 2 in 54.94. Could the untested freshman take down the junior favorite, Waller?
  • Oaks Christian advances everyone safely, as the Lions attempt to make a run for the first-ever state title in school history. That tasks necessitates no small doing, but US #1 200m runner Lauren Rain Williams and UCLA commit Schuyler Moore are up to the task - the ladies advanced safely with 100m times of 11.7/11.85, though US #2 Zaria Francis owns the fastest prelim time at 11.52. Francis also storms through 200m qualifying rounds, hitting US #8 23.51!
