Girls Discus
1. Elena Bruckner (Valley Christian, CA - Jr.) - Bruckner entered her junior season mainly as a shot putter, but that changed with her US #10 all-time mark of 182-8 in the discus in the middle of May at her league finals. What is amazing is her next best throw is exactly 20' less than her personal record.
2. Kiana Phelps (Kingsley-Pierson, IA - Jr.) - Phelps concluded her sophomore campaign in 2014 with the furthest throw of 179-7. The rest of the top 15 athletes form last year's discus leaderboard were all seniors. This spring Phelps threw a season's best of 172-9 on May 1st.
3. Josie Schaefer (Baraboo, WI - So.) - The young Josie Schaefer currently has the third furthest throw this outdoor season with her 169-4 at the Baraboo Invitational on May 11. The Wisconsin native ended her freshmen year of high school last spring with a personal best of 141-10.
4. Kendall Mader (Newbury Park, CA - Sr.) - Mader opened up the 2015 outing with the four furthest throws of her career. Since setting her personal record of 164-4 on March 7th, she hasn't thrown further than 154-0. Nonetheless if you catch the southern Californian on a good day she is very tough to beat.
5. Meia Gordon (Cypress Creek, TX - Sr.) - There aren't a plethora of great discus throwers from the south, but Gordon makes up for the lack of depth with a 160-7 personal record. Like most girls on our list, Gordon is undefeated this season in the discus and was most recently crowned UIL Texas State Champ on May 14th throwing 155-9.
6. Haley Showalter (Valor Christian, CO - Sr.) - The senior's best event is the hammer throw, in which she is the returning national runner-up from 2014. But she was on the cusp of All-American honors in the discus last June and looks poised to make the jump in 2015. The four-time Colorado state champion ranks U.S. No. 7 with her all-time best mark of 159-2. She was a World Youth Olympic Games qualifier in the discus last summer.
7. Desirea Buerge (Webb City, MO - Sr.) - The defending Missouri state champion is undefeated in the discus since 2013. She owns a season-best mark of 158-11, which is also her all-time best, to rank U.S. No. 8.
8. Mariah Mays (Rome Free Academy, NY - Sr.) - Mays just missed out on All-American honors in 2014, but her senior year could be prime time to break through. She was the New York State runner-up last spring and is undefeated this outdoor season in the Empire State. She has recorded three throws over 150 feet this spring, including a PR 157-11 to rank U.S. No. 9.
9. Oyesade Olatoye (Dublin Coffman, OH - Sr.) - Olatoye ranks U.S. No. 11 with a personal best mark of 155-4. The senior swept the discus and shot put at the 2014 Ohio State Championship and she looks to repeat the feat this spring. She is nearly undefeated in both events over the past two years, recording just one runner-up finish in the shot put at the Lexington Invitational this spring.
10. Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Mo. - Jr.) - Just this weekend, Rivera threw her personal best mark of 154-9 to win her fifth Missouri state title. The junior is more well-known for her javelin prowess, an event in which she is the U.S. No. 5 All-Time performer, but scooped up All-American honors in this event last June and is dangerous every time she competes.
