Misana Viltz US #1 13.71 110 hurdles gets action going early at Mt. SAC

Misana Viltz, a senior hurdler at Long Beach Millikan High School in Southern California, improved upon his US #2 13.93 win at the Arcadia Invitational last Saturday by dropping down over two tenths of a second in the invitational division of the high school boys 110 meter hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays with easily the nation's new #1 ranked time and personal best time for the UCLA recruit at 13.71. Viltz was a California state runner-up last spring in the 110 hurdles and appears to be destined to claim his first state title at season's end if he keeps racing like his last two weekends in major wins at Arcadia and Mt. SAC. 

Double winner last weekend in the girls hurdles at the Arcadia Invitaitonal, Tiana Bonds of Centennial High School in Nevada improved upon her US #3 time in the 100 meter hurdles with a 13.62 victory and her second race of the day saw Bonds beat her own national leading season best time in the 300 meter hurdles with a 41.29 performance after being pressed to the final set of hurdles by the Long Beach Poly (CA) duo of Ebony Crear (2nd, 41.46) and Kymber Payne (3rd,  42.41).

In the boys 800, Blake Haney of Stockdale (CA) held off a late challenge from Zac Petrie of Valor Christian (CO) to win the race in a new personal best time of 1:51.97 which ranks him #5 in the country. Haney settled back in the pack for much of the first lap before moving himself up into second position at the bell with Garrett Corcoran (Vill Park CA) leading out the field. Haney then seized the lead from Corcoran with 200 meters to go, but found Petrie breathing down his neck coming off the final turn. Last week's Arcadia Invitational 3200 winner Haney showcased his range and closing speed to then pull away enough from Petrie (2nd, 1:52.24) in the final 50 meters for the win. 

US boys 300 meter hurdles leader Robert Grant of Brophy College Prep in Arizona put together a great double in the 300 hurdles and 400 meter dash in a few hours span. Grant won the 300 meter hurdles in dominant fashion in a 37.06 clocking before running a lifetime best in the 400 by a full second in a US #9 performance of 47.50.

Last weekend at Arcadia, Marguax Jones of Redlands (CA) became the first girl over 20 feet in the long jump this outdoor season. Jones improved upon her US leading mark with a leap of 20'5'50", but she was outperformed by Courtney Corrin of Harvard Westlake (CA). Corrin is now the new US #1 ranked long jumper after recording a mark of 20'8.25" at Mt. SAC Relays for last summer's 5th place finisher at the World Youth Championships.

Mt. Sac Relays: Two ways for Rodriguez & Abrahamson to Brooks PR trips

Emma Abrahamson blazed the last 100 meters rolling from the final turn off a slow strategic race, while Nathan Rodriguez led wire to wire for both to win the invitational high school mile races at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and earn automatic invites to the Brooks PR Invitaitonal mile races on June 21st.

Competing in section 1 (seeded section) of the college/open women's 800 meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays in California on Friday afternoon, Niwot High School (CO) junior Elise Cranny took it to a field of older and more experience runners with a 2:06.61 victory, which also moves her to the very top of the high school girls national outdoor leaderboard.

California Milesplit will feature complete coverage of the 2014 Mt. SAC Relays starting Friday.   After Arcadia once again produced numerous elite performances, the stage is set for the Mt. SAC Relays to be a fine meet.  

Brooks PR mile added to this year's Mt. SAC Relays!

The Mt. SAC boys and girls mile races will now have more on the line than just bragging rights. Dubbed the Brooks PR Mile, the top two finishers from each race will earn invites to the Brooks PR Invitational this June 21st in Seattle.
