Jasmine Quinn, a senior at Fort Dorchester High School in South Carolina, ran the nation's fastest time in the 100 meter hurdles with a 13.33 FAT clocking (no wind reading) at the Father Kelly Classic on Saturday. It was a remarkable personal best drop in time for the South Carolina state champion hurdler Quinn, who last spring won four state outdoor titles including a 13.84 PR performance in the 100 meter hurdles finals. Quinn was a 100 meter hurdles finalist at last June's New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Greensboro, North Carolina in which she earned All-American honors with a sixth place finish in the finals. She will compete next at the Taco Bell Classic, which MileSplit will be providing a live stream at, and she will get to face off with last year's meet winner Chantel Ray of Hampton (VA), who has earned numerous All-American honors and was the national leader in the 55 meter hurdles for much of the indoor season. Quinn was also a winner in three other events on Saturday including the 100 meter dash (11.93), 200 meter dash (24.93), and long jump (18'11") as an exhibition of her athleticism and versatility.
Also competing at the Father Kelly Classic was indoor girls shot put national record breaker Raven Saunders of Burke High School (Charleston, SC). Burke can't break national records every time out, but she can put together impressive double performances as she did in the throws over the weekend with a US #2 shot put mark of 51'9.50" and a new personal best throw of 158'3" (US #4) in the discus. Saunders has vastly improved in a year's time in both events as she was sitting in the 130 foot range last spring in the discus and had a modest shot personal best of 42'5" in the shot put. We all know what happened at the indoor nationals back in March, when she shattered the high school indoor national record with a monster mark of 56'7.50". The shot put outdoor national record mark to beat is 54'10.75" set by Michelle Carter of Red Oak, Texas back in 2003.
The state of South Carolina's best distance runner in Zack Langston of Lexington was also in competition at the Father Kelly Classic as Langston easily won the 1600 in a time of 4:24, while had a race on his hands from Jackson Ellenburg (2nd, 9:39) of Ashley Ridge before able to create separation at the end for a 9:37 victory. Langstown is another South Carolina elite athlete that is likely gearing up for a big race and performance at the Taco Bell Classic next weekend to run closer or best his current PR's of 4:15 in the 1600 and 9:07 in the 3200.
