Three US#1's in Two Days:

  • 2 US #1's by Grassfield sophomore Grant Holloway (below left) - Video Interview
    • 7.32 55m hurdles on Friday - Race Video *Ties National Sophomore Class Record!* - Holloway who set the national freshmen record last winter in the 55 meter hurdles at 7.35, now shares the sophomore class national record in the event after his season opening performance with two former North Carolina high school hurdle greats in Johnny Dutch and Wayne Davis. 
    • 34.63 300m Dash on Saturday  -  Race Video - Pressed by teammate Isaiah Harper who finished 2nd in a US #8 time of 35.83, Holloway won his 3rd event of the meet and took off over a second from his freshmen year best (35.94)
  • US #1 1000m run of 2:29.62 by Derek Holdsworth (below right) (Lafayette VA) - Video Interview  |  Race Video - Holdsworth came out ontop of a loaded race which saw 5 of the nation's top 6 fastest performances in the 1000 with himself as the national leader followed by Deep Run's Matthew Novak (US #3 2:30.54), Varina's Darrick Thornhill (US #4 2:31.49), Warhill's Christopher Short (US #5 2:31.62), and Clover Hill's Josh Willard (US #6 2:32.25). All from Virginia.
  • US #2 by Vincent Lowe (Grassfield) - 55 Dash 6.39 on Friday -  Race Video - A short lived US #1 for 24 hours by Lowe, who was the first under 6.40 this season in the nation before Jahmaal Daniel from Terry Stanford in NC took over the national leaderboard with a 6.36. clocking. Grassfield went 1-2 in the finals with Lowe and teammate Isaiah Harper rolling to a US #4 time of 6.46 in second place.

More Highlights from CNU:
 
  • A US #2 clearance by Lafayette's Kathryn Tomczak (VA) in the girls' pole vault with a new personal best height of 11'6".
  • With a leap of 17'9" in the long jump, Mills Godwin (VA) senior Bria Anderson was able to sneak just inside the US top 10 list at a US #10 mark.
  • The Lafayette boys were just off their US #2 time of 8:11 from last weekend at Boo Williams in the 4x800 with a 8:13.20 victory at CNU. One of their legs in Jason Menzies (current US #2 in 1600) came back to win the 1600 the next day in 4:24.
  • South County's Morgan Knight ended her outdoor season with a big PR in the 100 hurdles at New Balance Nationals and started her indoor season with another PR in the 55 meter hurdles at CNU with a US #8 performance of 8.39. Knight also ran on the winning 4x200 relay for South County, which clocked in at a US #7 time of 1:47.44.
  • Four of the top 11 fastest 3200 indoor times this season nationally came in the girls 3200 with race winner Katie Sperry of Glen Allen at US #5 time of 11:11.12 followed by Grafton's Rachel Bloxom (US #7 11:12.06), Warhill's Miriam Buscher (US #10 11:14.59), and Lafayette's Adriana Hooks (US #11 11:15.01).
  • The Kellam girls anchored by a strong leg from Rachel Lewis pulled away from the Atlee girls in Friday's 4x800 meter relay with a US #4 winning time of 10:00.62.
 
 
 

12/14 JDL FastTrack High School Invitational, NC

Layla White (Cary NC) ran a US #1 time in 500 and was part of a US #1 time in 4x400

 

Girls Highlights

  • Jacklyn Howell (Southeast Raleigh) had a huge day, running a US #2 time of  8.15 to win the 55 hurdles and US #9 41.32 for the victory in the 300.  McKinley McNeill (Platinum Sports) and Jocelyn Culbreath (Reagan) were just behind, running 41.43 and 41.47 respectively.

  • Layla White (Cary) clocked a US #1 time of 1:16.93 in the 500, winning by over four seconds.  That sets the standard nationally for the early season, though many states are not yet competing. White also ran on the victorious 4x400 meter relay from Cary High School, which now owns the nation's top time in the event with a US #1 performance of 4:02.43.

  • 3 of the top 7 fastest girls 1600 times came at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem with Green Hope (NC) sophomore Elly Henes, two weeks separated from racing at NXN, winning with a US #4 performance of 5:07.57. Henes was able to just edge out Malia Ellington from Community School of Davidson at the finish line with Ellington being timed at US #5 5:07.60.

  • Sydnei Murphy of Apex (NC) took first in the finals of the 55 meter dash with a 7.18 clocking, but actually ran slightly faster in her preliminary heat that now places her US #4 at this point of the season with a 7.16 PR for the 12 seconds flat 100 meter junior sprinter. Murphy was double winner in the meet with another US #4 performance, but in the long jump with her field best mark of 18'3".

  • Starmont (NC) senior Hunter Welborn shares the US #1 ranking in the high jump with two others in the high jump with a clearance of 5'6' on Saturday. It matches her personal best in the event, which she has cleared in at least a dozen meets over the past two years.

Boys Highlights

  • Jahmaal Daniel (Terry Sanford NC) showed that he is ready for the season, dominating the 55 meter dash with a swift US #1 time of 6.36 - just 0.01 off of his PR from last year.  Daniel Estrada (Platinum Sports) ran 6.48 (US #5) to finish second, continuing the surge he began in the late spring.

  • Kimani Hoffman (Knightdale NC) reached out for a US #2 mark of 47'2" in the triple jump. After nearly eclipsing 48 feet outdoors, the reigning North Carolina 4A state Hoffman improved upon his indoor best of 46'8.25" from last year's New Balance Indoor Nationals by nearly half of a foot this past weekend. Hoffman swept the horizontal jumps as he topped the field in the long jump as well with a US #5 mark of 22'3.50".

  • A US #2 clocking of 35.02 by Jamaree Murray from Southeast Raleigh (NC) is a good sign that the senior and 47 second performer in the open 400 last spring is ready for big indoor season and run sub 35 seconds in the 300 in no time.

  • Murray and the Southeast Raleigh (NC) boys were also trucking around the oval in the 4x400 meter relay as a dominant 6 second victory was also a US #1 time at 3:25.75.

  • It down to the wire between Eastern Alamance's Saadiq Sweezer and Northeast Guilford's LeAndre McGill to determine the winner in the 500 meter dash. Sweezer found the top gear at the end to pull off a US #5 win at 1:06.86 and McGill right behind on his heels in a US #6 time of 1:06.98.

 

12/15 - Jim Mitchell Invitational (NY)

Girls Highlights

  • The first two sub 40 second times in the girls 300 meter dash nationally were found at the Jim Mitchell Invitational on Sunday night with Arlington (NY) junior Zola Golden winning the event in a US #1 clocking of 39.34 and taking second was New Rochelle sophomore Symone Darius at a US #2 time of 39.92.
  • The New Rochelle (NY) girls 4x200 meter relay featuring 300 meter runner-up Darius and 55 meter hurdles winner Ashley Wiggins (US #5 8.33) ran the fastest time in the country with a US #1 time of 1:42.79 at the Armory.
  • Benjamin Cardozo (NY) senior Denise Branch is only the second girl in the United States under 3 minutes for 1000 in this young indoor season as she won the 5 lap event by 6 seconds in a US #2 time of 2:59.61.
  • A quality 600 meter race was found with two of the nation's top three times being run in the event by Colonie sophomore Kirsten Kaminski able to defeat fellow sophomore Hilary Rizzo (US #3 1:38.43) of Bronxville in a US #2 time of 1:37.60.

 

Boys Highlights

  • Benjamin Bonhurt of Smithtown West (NY) extended his New York state leading throw in the shot put with a throw of 62'8", but also finds himself as the US #1 performer in the throwing event.
  • Edgemont's Corey Cooper (NY) moved well around the banks tracks of the Armory to run a US #10 time of 35.89 in the 300 meter dash. 
  • Returning New York state champion triple jumper Darrell Jones of Monroe-Woodbury had a solid season opening mark on Sunday with a US #9 performance of 45'4.25" in his primary event.
 

12/14 Holiday Invitational, AL

Girls Highlights

  • The distance girls were rolling down in the Deep South for indoor season at the Sportsplex in Birmingham, Alabama. Pelham sophomore Mary Grace Strozier and Hewitt-Trussville senior Veronica Lyle ran early season US #1 and US #2 times in the 1600 meter run with Strozier able to pull away slightly for a 5:01.82 meet record victory and Lyle right behind in second place at 5:02.67. Lyle and Strozier came back later in the 800 meter run with Lyle able to even the score for the weekend and put her name ontop of the national leaderboard in the event with a US #1 meet record time of 2:15.40 and Strozier three seconds back with a US #2 time of 2:18.56.
  • US #2 times for the Hoover (AL) girls sprint relays in both the 4x200 (1:44.07) and 4x400 (4:03.06) as well as setting new meet records. Their 4x200 could potentially challenge their 1:41 school record from the 2012 New Balance Indooor Nationals at season's end. One of their relay legs in senior Asia Hart won the open 400 meter race with a US #4 time of 59.09. Teammate Anaya Baker was also under 60 seconds in 3rd place (US #8 59.81).
  • Another US #2 time in the relays was produced by the Vestavia Hills (AL) girls in the 4x800 meter relay as one of only 3 teams to have run under 10 minutes in the event at this early point of the indoor season across the nation with their meet record run.
  • Woodlawn (AL) freshmen Jayla Kirkland was 2 tenths of a second than her season opening race in the 60 meter dash last weekend, which moved her into the US #1 ranking with a 7.57 victory at the Holiday Invite.
  • A stellar long jump competition was found in Birmingham with 4 of the nation's top 6 best marks in the event performed with sophomore Kayla Williams of James Clemens High School just edging out Kiara Williams (US #3 18'4") of Homewood High School by a half inch with a US #2 and facility record leap of 18'4.50".
  • 2012 Alabama pole vault state champion Moriah Lorge (Bob Jones AL) of is determined to finish her senior year as a state champion once again and has started off sharp clearing a US #5 height of 11'3", which is only 3 inches below her personal best and broke the meet record by 3 inches.
  • A reigning state indoor champion in the shot put, Northridge (AL) junior Indyia Summerville achieved a new personal best and facility record mark in her specialty with a US #6 performance of 41'1.50".

 

 

Boys Highlights

  • Like the Hoover girls, the Hoover boys dominated the sprint relays with their 4x200 meter relay running the nation's fastest time so far with a US #1 1:31.28 clocking. The top three fastest times in the country were posted in the race with runner-up relay McAdovery High School (US #2 1:32.42) and third place relay Thompson High School (US #3 1:32.67). The Hoover quartet almost made it two national leading times on the day with their 4x400 meter relay winning in a US #2 meet record time of 3:26.43 at meet's end.
  • Vestavia Hills (AL) senior pole vaulter Joseph Lee is now tied with four others with the nation's top performance in the pole vault after clearing a US #1 height of 15 feet at the Crossplex as he also broke the old meet record by 6 inches. McGillen-Toolen (AL) teammates Sean Collins (2nd, 14'6") and Chris Taylor (3rd, 14'0") also vaulted well early in the season with both vaulters over 14 feet and finishing among the top 3 to earn US top 10 rankings.
  • Oak Mountain (AL) senior Randall Ceneus was able to runaway from a field of 50 second runners in the open 400 to run an indoor PR and US #2 time of 49.98. Ceneus last spring worked his 400 meter time down to 48.77 outdoors and finished fourth at the Alabama state meet.
  • Jaalen Jones from Auburn High School (AL) easily pulled away from field in the 60 meter dash finals and claim the US #1 time in the short sprint event with a 6.87 clocking, which also broke a 2 year old facility record.
  • Alabama outdoor state champion in the triple jump last spring, Latravious Glenn of Dadeville was just short of his personal best in the event from that outdoor state championship meet with a US #7 mark of 45'6" on Saturday at the Crossplex.

Highlights

  • Ciera Leonard of Cheltenham (PA) ran a national leading time to win the 60 meter hurdles with a US #1 8.94 clocking. She has taken over as top hurdler of her program after the graduation of Kayla Coley and looks ot be competitive at the state and national level. Leonard also ran on the victorious 4x200 meter relay, which ran a PA state leading and US top 15 time of 1:49.00.

  • A very competitive early season girls 4x800 was found at Lehigh University with three teams under 10 minutes and several others knocking on the door of having a relay leg average faster than 2:30 with the Strath Haven (PA) girls rocking and rolling in December already with a US #1 performance of 9:39.5 (hand-timed). Their 4x400 meter relay also ran a US #6 time of 4:06.20.

  • Terri Turner of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (PA) popped a US #2 time of 2:17.85 in the 800. Only a freshmen, Turner ran a 2:14 in the open 800 last summer at the AAU Club Nationals. Council Rock North senior Kaleyn Heinicke was able to push Turner to the fast time as she went under 2:20 herself with an indoor PR performance of 2:19.40 (US #4).

  • Holly Sullivan of Owen J. Roberts (PA) uncorked her first of likely many 18 plus foot performances in the long jump this year with a current US #6 mark at 18 feet event.
  • Upper Darby's Claudine Andre is now the US #6 current performer in the high jump with a 5'5" clearance at Lehigh. Andre matched her personal best height, which she has cleared twice in the last outdoor season.
  • Brooklyn Broadwater, a sophomore at Springside Chesnut Hill Academy, blew away the competition in the 400 meter dash by nearly 3 full seconds with a 58.83 clocking to move her into a US #4 ranking at the metric quarter mile distance.

 

  Liberty Elite Invitational, VA

Highlights

  • Battlefield (VA) senior Ellison Grove (pictured by Jon Fleming) broke 3 minutes for the first time in 1000 last week and lowered her PR by 2 seconds again racing at Liberty University with a US #1 time of 2:56.13 in the 1000 for the 2013 Virginia Group AAA state champion at 800 meters.
  • The state of Virginia currently has 8 fastest 1000 meter times in the nation after this past weekend. While the majority came from a deep race at CNU, Blacksburg's Kenneth Hagen ran the a US #2 winning time of 2:30.46 at Liberty. Hagen ran 1:52 in the open 800 last spring
  • The Parkland girls from Winston-Salem, North Carolina clocked a US #3 time of 1:45.66 in the 4x200 meter relay. Parkland traded wins in the sprint relays with another NC powerhouse program in Wakefield, who claimed the 4x400 in 4:03.
  • A deep girls 3200 race with 5 runners under 11:20 including a 1-2 finish by Blacksburg runners Emily Beatty (1st, 11:11) and Bonnie Angermeier, who competed just last weekend in Oregon at the Nike Cross Nationals with their cross country team.
  • A three-time state champion in the discus throw outdoors, Matthew Zajac of E.C. Glass is seeking his first state title indoors or outdoors in the shot put. Zajac is off to a good start this winter including a US top 10 mark of 55'9" this past Saturday at the Liberty Elite Meet. 
  • In his first meet competing for E.C. Glass High School after transferring over from another Lynchburg area school at Heritage, Requan Harley recorded a near foot and a half PR in the long jump with a US #2 mark of 22'9" at the Tolsma Track Center.

 

 

 12/13-14 Gloucester Pre-Holiday Invitational, VA

Phoebus (VA) junior Charles Graham continued his hot start to the indoor season with a sub 7.50 clocking in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles at the Gloucester Pre-Holiday Invite on Friday night with a US #3 7.49 clocking.

 

Highlights:

  • Henrico (VA) junior LaChyna Roe recorded a US #2 mark of 37'7.25" in the triple jump and the next best performer in the event was teammate Amani McFadden also leaping herself into the US top 10 list with a US #6 mark of 36'3.25".
  • A good battle in the boys 300 with US top 10 times posted by the top two finishers in winner Marcus Taylor (VA) of Highland Springs in a time of 35.23 (just off his US #3 SB of 35.21) and runner-up Ian Barrett (VA) of Warwick in a US #7 time of 35.69. Taylor also won the 55 meter dash with a 6.51 finals performance and ran a leg on the first 4x200 meter relay from Highland Springs (1:33.84).
  • Phoebus (VA) junior Charles Graham followed up his 7.54 season opening win last week at the Real Deal Classic in Hampton with another victory and his third sub 7.50 clocking ever in a US #3 effort of 7.49 at the Gloucester Pre-Holiday Invite.
  • Riverdale Baptist (MD) thrower Rashad Manning flirted with a 60 foot throw last year as sophomore with a 59'2.25" personal best from the University of Kentucky Invitational last indoor season and looks to build towards that barrier this year after a season best performance of 55'10.50" at Boo Williams Sportsplex, which ranks him US #6 currently.

Girls Highlights

  • Archbishop Molly's Niamani Morrisson went over 18 feet for only the second time in her high school career and the senior really jumpstarted her indoor season a with US #1 leap of 18'9.25" in the long jump on Saturday at the Armory.
  • Melany Belot of Kellenberg Memorial was clocked at 8.2 for a hand-held time at the CHSAA Relay Carnival, which converted to FAT would put her just outside of the nation's current top 10 list in the girls' 55 meter hurdles. Her fastest FAT time from last indoor season came at the indoor state meet with a 8.58 clocking.

Boys Highlights
 

  • Fordham Prep (NY) senior James Deutmeyer has won his share of pole vault competitions in the past at the Armory and added another special memory at the facility in clearing 15 feet (tied for US #1) for the first time and a share of the national leaderboard in the event.
  • Deutmeyer's Fordham Prep teammates in the 4x800 were also victorious and impressive in posting a US #1 time of 8:07, which is the current top time in the nation after this past weekend by four seconds.
  • A third US #1 performance from the boys' events came from Mosignor Farrell senior Justin Sicari with his 6'6" clearance in the high jump tying him with two others as nation's best.

 

12/14 - Ithaca College Bomber Invitational (NY)

Girls Highlights

  • Sweet Home (NY) junior Aileen Doyle clocked a US #1 time of 10:30.20 in the 1000 meter run, which was a 9 second PR for her after coming off a cross country season which included a 14th place in her race at the New York State Meet. 
  • Jaskiran Dhaliwal of Grand Island High School launched a big bomb of a throw in a US #1 mark of 44'5" in the shot put at Ithaca.
  • Lancaster (NY) sophomore Ashley Grazen blew away the field in the 55 meter dash with a US #1 clocking of 7.26. Only a tenth of a second off her freshmen year best of 7.16 from a year ago.

Boys Highlights

  • A 1:53 half miler last spring, Matt Murray (Norwich NY) is looking like he should be able to best that time in the outdoor season after running a US #2 time of 1:22.43 in the 600 meter run this past weekend. With 48 second open 400 meter speed, the Norwich senior Murray could run close to 1:20 later this season.

  • The Warwick Valley duo of pole vaulters in Derek Dibona and Todd Uckermark put on quite an exhibition in the event in a smaller Monday meet at West Point with both clearing national leading heights of 15 feet.

  • Estevan De La Rosa, top runner for the Arcadia High School team in California, won the 17-18 age group boys division at the USATF JO Nationals with a strong time of 15:31 to win the race by 33 seconds ahead of his O'Briens Army club teammate Jarrick Wenslow (2nd, 16:04) from Birmingham High School in Los Angeles. De La Rosa was coming off a fifth place finish at the Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon with a 15:10 5K performance at Portland Meadows.
  • Kansas 3A state champion Alex Conn from Beloit High School finished 3rd in the 17-18 age group with a time of 16:08 as he was able to just hold off Virginia 2A state champion Alex Fleckenstein from Maggie Walker Governor's School in fourth place at 16:09.
  • 2011 Foot Locker West Regional champion and current student-athlete at Ole Miss, Karlie Garcia (2013 graduate of Oaktmont High School in California), dominated the 17-18 age group with a swift time of 17:36 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.  Arcadia (CA) High School senior Veronia Yamane was a distant runner-up to Garcia in the race with a time of 18:38. Yamane looks to breaks 5 minutes on the track this spring in the mile after running 5:02 last spring.
  • Arcadia High School certainly has another star runner in the making in Phillip Rocha, who ran 4:17 in the 1600 and low 14s for 3 miles as a freshmen last year. Rocha finished his cross country season with a 5th place finish at the California State Meet, 64th place finish at the Nike Cross Nationals, and a USATF National Junior Olympics age group title with a 15:47 victory in the 15-16 boys age group this past weekend. Another sophomore from California in Jake Ogden from Dana Hills High School, a sub 4:20 miler as well as a freshmen, was runner-up in the same race as Rocha with a time of 16:02.
  • After finishing 22nd at the Foot Locker West Regional last weekend at Mt. Sac, Los Altos (CA) sophomore Lauren Jacob made the trip San Antonio and became a USATF National JO age group champion for 15-16 year old girls as she pulled away for a 12 second margin of victory in a time of 18:20. A 4:51 miler in Amanda Gehrich from Tesoroa High School in California was the race runner-up with a 18:32 effort on the 5K course.
