2023 Notable XC Finishes: 1st at the Mook XC Invite at Alderbrook, 6th at the Nike - Hole in the Wall Invitational, 1st at the District 2 - 3A SeaKing Cross Country Championships and 1st at the WIAA State XC Championships.
Analysis: A three-time Washington state champion during his junior season, Owen Powell is back for his senior season as one of the best distance runners nationally after an impressive junior year. Last fall saw Powell win six of his first seven races of the season in Washington/Oregon, often in dominant fashion. In his six wins last season, Powell won by an average of 17 seconds. In his only in-state loss, he finished 6th at the Nike - Hole in the Wall Invitational where he finished with a time of 15:22.70 against elite high school competition. Powell finished his season at the NXR Northwest Regional where he finished 212th.
In the spring, Powell took things to another level, breaking records and rewriting his personal records. On April 20th at the Oregon Relays, Powell broke the 21-year-old national high school record in the 1000m, running a time of 2:23.22. Adding to his accolades, Powell won the Washington state titles in the 800m and 1600m, finished 8th in the mile at the Brooks PR Invitational, and finished 10th in the 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational with a time of 8:41.03.
