Southeast Raleigh's Kyna Robinson and Hoke County's Maya Singletary went down to the wire in a nail-biting 500m dash at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A indoor state meet (NCHSAA) in Winston-Salem, NC, on Saturday.
The two were neck and neck the entire race until the final straightaway. That's when Singletary ran out of steam and Robinson came up on the outside to nab first place away just before the line.
Robinson's time of 1:12.33 is a new all-time North Carolina state record and a new U.S. No. 2 mark this year. Singletary, the defending 500m state champion, ended up taking second in 1:12.61.
Robinson doubled back shortly after to race in the 300m dash and came away with an upset win over High Point Central's Leah Bolden. Robinson ran a 39.73 for the win, while Bolden ran 39.80 for second place.
