Top Girls Highlight Great American CC Festival

For nearly a decade, the Great American Cross Country Festival has hosted many of the top teams and individuals from around the country, in a series of races that are meant to be some of the best in the land. This year, Great American highlights many of the best teams in the South and Southeast. The top race, the Nike Race of Champions - Girls 5k, brings together over a half dozen Foot Locker hopefuls, and four teams hoping to qualify for Nike Team Nationals. The weekend once again is a major national meet.

Girls

The individual battle in the Nike Race of Champions - Girls 5K is top notch. The battle up front is one of the most competitive around the nation all fall. Not only is the national defending champion Kathy Kroeger (Sr., Independence, TN) in the field, as are US #2 Ashley Brasovan (Wellington, FL) and US #7 Emily Reese (Sr., Chamblee). That trio is enough to make any field dominant, however, runners such as Kayla Hale (Holy Trinity, FL), Katlyn Will (Corinth, MS), Emilie Amaro (Cypress Bay, FL), Stephanie Morgan (Barnesville, OH), Mary Grace Pellegrini (DuPont, KY) and Jennifer Dunn (Austin, AL) also have a chance to compete for the win. While all eyes are on Kroeger, Brasovan and Reese, do not discount a breakout race from any of the others.

In the team race, nationally ranked Mountain Brook (AL) enters the race as the favorite. Not only are they racing in front of their home state fans, but they are riding a wave of confidence from winning the Bob Firman Invitational a few weeks back, and dominating their own home invitational two weeks back. However, Episcopal (FL) scored a big win last week over then-nationally ranked Eleanor Roosevelt (MD). Both those teams have the talent to win the race. Collins Hill (GA) and Oak Ridge (TN) run strong, and could prove to upset.

Boys

While the girls Nike Race of Champions is the show of the day, but boys Nike Race of Champions has a lot of talent in it. The best battle is for the team title. A few regionally ranked teams get a chance to match up. Oak Ridge (TN), Baylor (TN), Hoover (AL) and Parkview (GA) all fight for regional bragging rights. The 4-5 runners of each team will make or break their respective races, as each team matches up fairly well.

Individually, Sean Keveren (Sr., Brentwood, TN) leads the field as the easy pre-race favorite. Keveren's been on a roll the past few weeks, beating his competition in grand fashion. This is one of those races where he can really prove just how good he is on a national level.
