OK: WHO IS GOING TO BE ON THE PLANE TO DONETSK?

The New Balance Outdoor Nationals were a fitting final qualifying meet of the season for the U.S. Trials this coming Tuesday and Wednesday at Edwardsville, Illinois. Here are a few things you might need to know or find useful prior to the competition. First be sure to bring your passport with you to Edwardsville. It will do you no good if you leave it at home. No passport, no tickee.

The list below has been trimmed to just those people who have entered the meet. It does not include who as actually declared since that information was not available at the press time. As you all know, or should know, the team will be made up of 40 members. As you will see from the list, the competition is very, very tough in some events and not so tough in other events.

What must be keep in mind is that you will also be in competition with all of the athletes in all of the events so it would be advisable to give a maximum effort. If spots were guaranteed by achieving a specific time or distance or height this would not be necessary, but that is not the case. Information on the list includes what it took to make the finals in 2011. Also listed are the world Youth leader in each event and where the leading U.S. performers currently stand in the world according to the IAAF Youth lists.

Since, for the first time, the marks at the U.S. trials can be used as qualifying marks for the World Youth championships there will probably be a number of changes in position and rankings.  In doing the world ranking a maximum of two athletes were counted since only two can qualify from a country in each event. The rankings were very straight forward in events where there are no differences between what is done in the U.S. vs. what is done in the rest of the world. However, in some distances and some field events an attempt was made to blend the differences to come up with the rankings.

Also realize that only about 70 percent of the athletes ranked in the top 10 will actually be at the World Youth championships. In looking at the U.S. boys team, counting a maximum of two per event, 32 athletes have demonstrated the ability to make a final and 22 rank in the top 10 in the world in their event. On the girl’s team, 27 have demonstrated the ability to make a final and 23 rank in the top 10 in the world. Mary Cain is not counted, but if she runs, add one in each category.

U.S. ATHLETES IN CONTENTION FOR THE WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

The following list is for informational use only. It includes athletes who have achieved the IAAF qualifying standard necessary to qualify for the World Youth championships and are entered in the U.S. Trials. These marks need to be achieved between October 1, 2012 and June 26, 2013. It includes only marks that I am aware of and should not be considered 100 percent inclusive. Some of the athletes might, at the last moment, decide not to declare for the U.S. trials and not compete. In addition, a few athletes may be added who applied after the initial deadline of June 17 but before the final deadline of June 19. For the first time marks achieved in the U.S. Trials can be used to meet the IAAF qualifying standards. In addition, in events where there is little competition (1,500, 3,000 and 400 hurdles) marks are also listed for the 1,600/mile, 3,200/two miles, 300 hurdles are listed for reference. These marks may not be used to qualify for the World Youth championships. The major purpose of this list is to let the readers know what is happening with regard to athletes and their prospects for the World Youth Championships.

Had Haney run just 1,500 his time would have probable been at least two seconds faster. Assuming so Haney would rank No. 7 and O’Toole No. 10 in the world. Josh Evans does not have a qualifying time so far but based on his 1,600 time of 4:08.8 enroute to a mile he would rank No. 11. This shapes up to be one of the best races of the trials.

Blake Haney’s time of 8:20.48 enroute to a 3,200 is No. 6 but if he had been in just a 3,000 he almost surely would move to No. 5.
