School: Buchanan (CA)

Analysis: Smith has quietly turned herself into one of the top cross country runners in California over the last two seasons with Buchanan High School. And that dominance should continue in 2018, as the junior is coming off her first CIF Division 1 state title and her first qualification to NXN, where her team finished 12th overall and Smith was 21st. 

Smith ran a season-best 5K of 17:05.30 at the Clovis Invitational, a race where she finished second, and won the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in 15:58.40, which was her first effort under 16 minutes for three miles. Smith's expectations should raise just slightly in her third year, and paired with senior teammate Meagen Lowe--who finished second at CIF--the tandem should once again help Buchanan earn more hardware.
