Emily Covert Throws Down A Meet Record In The 3200
Transitioning from her US No. 1 over the indoor season in the 3200m, MInneapolis Washburn (MN) High junior Emily Covert cruised in her first effort at the distance on Friday at the Hamline Elite Meet in a US No. 6 mark of 10:17.41, breaking a meet record that stood at 10:23.00.
Covert is now just 11 seconds within striking distance of the Minnesota state record of 10:06.95, which was last achieved in 2006 by Bria Westch.
Covert was racing all alone for much of the race, while Winona Cotter's seventh-grade phenom Lauren Ping finished second in a new all-time best of 10:25.12. With that effort, Ping also bested the all-time best of her sister, Grace, who won a Minnesota Class A state title in 2016 with a time of 10:31.27 in the 3200m.
Math & Science Academy freshman Tierney Wolfgram was third in 10:50.50 while Farmington freshman Anna Fenske, a pre-race favorite, was seventh in 11:10.36.
