Florida's State Championships
In Class 2A action, the Bolles boys took the team title with 45 points. The Bulldogs were led by Charles Hicks, who won in 15:16.78. Lake Wales senior Paul Stafford, the winner of the FSU Invitational in October, placed second in 15:23.02 while Bishop Kenny's Nathan Jubran placed third to round out the top three.
In the girls Class 2A race, Pine Crest and Bolles faced off, but it was the Panthers who came away with their second straight state title. Tsion Yared led the Pine Crest girls to the team, earning her second class 2A state title in three years with a winning time of 18:00.16.
Placing second was Key West's Nicole Matysik, who ran 18:19.33. Pine Crest took the next to places with Maya Beleznay in third and Lily Henne in fourth.
Class 4A
The race was down to Newsome's Bailey Hertenstein and Riverview's Alyssa Hendrix. But it was Hertenstein who ran away with the win by using a sleight downhill to finish strong.
She pulled away to take the win by four seconds, running a new course record and 5K best of 17:26.61.
Hendrix finished in second in 17:30.82. Rounding out the top three was Dr. Phillips High's Isabella Bartczak, who ran 18:09.18. The ladies from Winter Park took home the team title scoring 136 points.
