Broomfield (Colorado) High coach Greg Weich answered a few questions about his upcoming season. See his answers below.
How has your summer training gone for your team? What do you focus on during the summer months?
We've had 55-70 athletes on a daily basis, Monday through Saturday. We mostly focus on establishing good habits outside of practice and getting in a good volume run. We establish consistent, daily work ethic. We had a team-building camp in the mountains in early August.
Which athletes do you see as the probable top five this season?
Madison Mooney, Ivy Gonzales, Laura Thompson, Emily Mitchem, Katelyn Mitchem
Who are your team captains or leaders and what stands out about them as examples for the rest of their teammates?
We have no team captains. The girls all bring unique individual qualities to the team. Some are more vocal than others. Some lead quietly with steady work while being calm. Our physical leader is Madison Mooney (2017 Arcadia Mile Champion, 4:47 mile)
Who are some new faces who will make an impact on your team this year (i.e. freshmen, transfers, runners who have improved a lot)?
Sydney Swanker has had a great summer and is starting to look like she will be a very solid contributor for us. Alison Leister, Lauren Felknor, and Eliza Hale will also be vying for a top seven spot by the end of the year.
What are some staple workouts your team does during the season?
Volume runs, LT runs and combination workouts. Race and course-specific pace training.
What will be the biggest reason why your team is successful this season?
We will be very solid up front and we have a small spread through five. When someone is having an off day, someone else will pull a great race out of themselves. They are fighters.
What will be the biggest obstacle or challenge facing your team this season?
We need to recognize and come to terms with our weaknesses (the Dragon), and slay them.
How would you describe your team's culture?
They are competitive among themselves during practice time. On race days, they turn all of that against their competition. They are excellent at coming together and defending what they have built together on race days.
What are your top three goals for the team this fall?
- Win the state championship for the third consecutive year.
- Win Nike Regionals
- Make the podium at NXN.
