New Braunfels Canyon senior and University of Texas signee Sam Worley ran the No. 11 all-time fastest high school boys mile in the Jerry Thompson Mile on Saturday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, winning the elite field in 4:00.61.
UTEP's Jonah Koech was sixth in 4:03.75.
Worley's Splits:
400m - 1:01.57
800m - 1:00.99
1200m - 1:01.77
Mile - 56.30
The performance was on the senior's future home track.
"It just means a lot," Worley said, "especially for this to be on my future track home turf. I felt some kind of pride coming here. I saw Bevo today. I felt like that was some good luck right there, so I knew it was going to be a special day."
Worley said it was bittersweet not to get that elusive sub-four-minute time.
"I really wanted to be under four, but you have to be happy with the results your given," Worley said. "I put in a good effort today, so it's just something to be proud of."
