The question that seems to be changing every year is this: Where will the girls 3,200m take us?
Times have been dropping for the last six years, ever since Cornwall (NY) High senior Aisling Cuffe went 9:56.16 in 2011. But after Cuffe, there have been four girls who have led the national scene with tremendous efforts under 10 minutes, including Wesley Frazier (NC), Bethan Knights (CA), Destiny Collins (CA) and Weini Kelati (VA).
This year we could be in for an even better battle up front between two cross country champions: Malibu (CA) High's Claudia Lane, a Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals winner, and Grandview (CO) High's Brie Oakley, the champion at NXN.
Currently, Lane has the nation's best time at 10:12.21, but Oakley, coming off a national title in the 5K at New Balance Nationals Indoor -- where she set a new national record -- hasn't raced the distance yet.
Just what can we expect?
