Sydney McLaughlin Sets Two National Records
Sixteen-year-old Sydney McLaughlin showed she has the stuff to make the Olympic team this summer with a showstopping performance at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
The Union Catholic, New Jersey, junior ran 54.46 to win the 400m hurdles in a new national high school record. The time is a new world youth best and ranks No. 2 all-time for world junior athletes. In 2016, McLaughlin is now the fifth-fastest performer in the world and fourth-fastest in the United States.
McLaughlin also split 50.93 for 400m to help set the national high school record in the 1000 Sprint Medley Swedish Relay at 2:07.99, with help from Tyler Scott, Amaya Chadwick, Amari Onque-Shabazz. The win marks their third straight title in the event. McLaughlin's time is the fastest split ever recorded by a high school girl.
