Drew Hunter ran 3:58.25 to break the National High School Record in the Mile on Saturday afternoon at the Armory Track Invitational in New York.
The mark made him just second prep ever to break four minutes in the mile indoors; the prior standard of 3:59.86 was set by Alan Webb in 2001.
The race is his second National High School Record in consecutive weekends; the University of Oregon recruit became the first prep to break eight minutes in the 3K last weekend at the Camel City Elite Meet (7:59.33).
The senior at Loudon Valley High School in Va. ran at the front of the chase pack about 10 meters behind the lead pack led by Chris O'Hare of Great Britain/adidas. Hunter passed 800m in just about two minutes and 1200m in about 3:01 before closing in 57.07 to finish at the back of the front pack.
Overall victor O'Hare stood with Hunter at the finish line as the entire fieldhouse waited for the clock to reveal whether the prep joined the sub-four club.
When the official results flashed, the entire New York Armory erupted and the fastest high school distance runner in history took a victory lap -- abetted by selfie requests from sideline fans.
