8. Will Lauer (SD) - Boys 5K Champion
Another daring pace setter from the gun, South Dakota's finest in Will Lauer from Sioux Falls Lincoln, never let the rest of Friday night's 5K field get close to him. At one point of the race, Lauer looked to have built up a lead approaching 100 meters in distance.
After winning the South Dakota state 3200 title this past spring in 8:58 and a top 30 finish at NXN in the fall, Lauer topped both of those performances with his best race to date. Lauer crossed the line first in an event which was scheduled to start on Friday night but ended up finishing after midnight into Saturday morning with a new 5K personal best time of 14:35. Lauer is headed to Stanford University in the fall.
