Rhode Island Hammer Throw State Meet Held At Nationals
It was a big day for Rhode Island inside the hammer circle at New balance Nationals as the Ocean State claimed five of the top six spots, including a first-place effort from Barrington senior Adam Kelly.
Kelly, a two-time indoor nation champion with the 25-pound weight, won his first hammer crown with an all-time best toss of 241 feet, 7 inches (US #2). Finishing second was junior teammate Bobby Colantonio with a distance of 236-1. Moses Brown senior Owen Russell secured a 1-2-3 sweep by R.I. by taking third overall with a heave of 220-9. All three throwers occupied the same positions for the 25-pound weight at the indoor nationals.
“I got off to a shaky start,” Kelly said. “I had good warmups but them the first one was a foul and the second one was pretty low but I got it in. It was 64 (meters) something. I knew it would get me into the finals. I just went for it after that. That’s when I got 241 (feet).”
