Defending New Balance Nationals outdoor 400 meter champion Josephus Lyles, a junior from T.C. Williams in Virginia, won the boys 400 in Cuba with a time of 46.60 at the Caribbean Scholastic Invite.

Day 1 Highlights:
- Josephus Lyles (T.C. Williams VA) won the boys 400 in dominant fashion with his time of 46.60, which is a US #11 season best for the defending New Balance Nationals Outdoor champion.
- Nicole Greene (Ponte Verda FL) successfully cleared 6 feet for another meet in the girls high jump to win the competition.
- The US #2 and US #3 ranked javelin throwers in the country competed head to head for Team USA in Katelyn Gochenour (Marian NE) and Sophia Rivera (Brentwood MO) with Gochenour having the better throwing day with a best mark of 162'8.25".
- Big throw from Georgia state champ Isaiah Rogers in the boys shot put with a winning mark of 62'11.50". Just a foot off his US #10 ranked season best throw from the junior at Campbell High School.
- Both Cassondra Hall of Georgia at 11.59 and Twanisha Terry of Florida at 11.87 both rolled to prelim wins in the 100 meter dash.
- Davis (UT) distance runner Logan McKay won the boys 1500 meter run kicking his way to a sub 4 minute time at 3:58.69.
- It was a sweep of the girls 100 meter hurdles titles for the Americans at both the junior (33 inches) and youth (30 inches) hurdle heights for Anna Cockrell (Providence Day NC) in the junior race at 13.76 and Alexis Duncan (DeSoto TX) in the youth race at 13.20.
- Should be a thrilling boys 100 meter finals on Saturday between Ryan Clark and Noah Lyles, similar to their races at New Balance Nationals Indoor, with Clark (10.65) and Lyles (10.47) both winning their prelim races on Friday.
- Indoor national 60 meter hurdles champ Grant Holloway went sub 14 seconds in the prelims of the 110 meter hurdles (13.93) before cruising through a finals, which had a false start and another athlete not show for him to run a solo 14.34 race in Cuba.
