Before Saturday, February 7, 2015, the national record in the high school boys pole vault belonged to Devin King, 17'10.25" from 2014. It wasn't King's record that Benavides (El Paso Franklin HS, Texas) broke though. Earlier on Saturday, Deakin Volz (Bloomington South HS, Indiana) vaulted 17' 10.5" to set the national record. It was a record that Volz held for only a few hours as Benavides jumped 17' 11'' later that evening at the Cherry & Silver All-Comers Meet in Albuquerque, New Mexico to complete the most historic day of high school pole vaulting ever!
